For what it's worth, Roy Chicky Arad is an Israeli poet, and the poem speaks eloquently (and viscerally) of commonalities between the dead in both Beirut and Haifa. People are dying, helpless and afraid, and that is a tragedy which transcends geopolitical maneuvering or ideology. To cry out against war and death is human, and has nothing to do with championing either armed party in the conflict.

excuse me, but i unfortunatley happen to know this so called "poet". roy chiki arad is a left wing tel avivian communist and pro arab poet, it is people like him in the israeli public and media that brought this situation in the first place, with all the hallucinations about peace. Oslo, the 2nd intifada, lebanon - its all on thier own head. plz plz don't give us that crap, thank you.

i agree, Postunder. I'm generally anti-war, but in Israel's case it's offensive-self-defense; a fight for their very existence against Islamic fundimentalists who's dream and intent is a Muslim(their brand of)world by any means. Period. What EVER country those killers exist in, they cause trouble and slavery.
Btw, they have a great propaganda machine. The FBI should somehow infiltrate every Mosque here to weed out and arrest the BAAAAD one's. That's where the jihadist's infiltrate and teach the children to hate. I await the day when the good Muslim's turn in those scum- a little self-policing-aye? Instead of whinning "It's not nice to use the term Islamofasicts-waaaaaaa!" (OK then, Islamonatzi's!) No sympathy for the devil from me.
And no, I have not read his poetry, but then, I've never read Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler

Then, if you have no comments based on hearing Walcker's music, or at least reading the text, all you are doing is trolling another netlabel's release announcement with your own political views. Bad form.

not to go too offsubject - but how many of our "own" did the same thing during the vietnam war - lots of "great musical names" came out of that conflict while smoking a doob or two, sitting in coffee shops, and bitched and moaned through their music partly or fully to make a name for themselves. ie Dylan, Baez, Young etc etc. Not that i don't like their music, but...............

After reading this I fully realize the Hezbollah must disarm and turn themselves in before their anti-semantic hate kills more innocent people- right on!

The Street (Beirut Haifa 2006)

The consensus ? its smell like a baby's corpse
The beautiful town has to be crushed and lost
Wipe down lovely girls with curls of oil
I'm a traitor, says "24 hours"* editor
A fifth column ? suggests NRG** wet predator

Your deterrence is a sushi bar flaming like hell
Children staining autographs on a fresh copper shell
The second biggest bank and a trampled journal
Produce a window-car sticker "victory will be ours!"
In Haifa & Beirut at a golden dawn
a pair of balding infrastructure workers were blown

Did they receive compensations? Have tenure?
Maybe they were just affiliated from HR
Had a nose and two testicles, each
On sunny holidays, loved the beach
Both the deceased from Haifa and his mate from Beirut
Used to fish with a punctured bottle
They baited bread, the fish jumped around
In the saucepan it felt happy and sound
In a new pool that I bought for my roof,
From a haggler in the alley of Metalon
Floating among yellow rubber duckies
I feel just like Arik Sharon
"I am a liberal girl", Dana Kobalio mumbles,
"But they understand only strength and battles".
In the stupid sheets of my defeated bed
We turn around like two handles

"Soldier, there comes a time when
The nation needs sacrifice and tears",
The leader claims, examining the poll in fear
The tears ? your mom's too. They will sacrifice you.
Go on, little lad, give Yatspan*** your thanks.

August 2006. The poem was translated from Hebrew by Adva Levin.

* A daily section in an Israeli newspaper
** An Israeli news website
*** Eli Yatspan - A well known Israeli TV host
